What thread count actually measures

Thread count is the number of warp and weft yarns per square inch of woven fabric. A 200 count sheet has 200 yarns per inch, adding both directions. Once weavers noticed marketing rewarded higher numbers, some began wrapping two or three thinner yarns together and counting each strand separately. This produced sheets labelled 800 or 1,000 count that were in reality closer to 250 or 300 count in single-yarn terms. The ASTM D3775 test method defines thread count as single yarns per inch, but retail packaging enforcement is inconsistent.

Above about 400 single-yarn threads per inch, cotton weaves become physically hard to produce without doubling. A sheet labelled 300 to 400 count in pure long-staple cotton is often more comfortable than a 1,000 count sheet using doubled short-staple yarns, which sleeps hot and pills within a year.

Fibre length matters more than thread count

Cotton fibres are classified by staple length. The longer the fibre, the smoother and stronger the yarn spun from it.

The trademark Supima protects the name for extra long staple American Pima cotton. Giza 45 refers to a specific Egyptian cultivar; the general phrase Egyptian cotton is not regulated in the same way and can appear on blends containing very little cotton grown in Egypt.

Percale, sateen, and jersey in plain language

The weave changes the feel more than most shoppers expect. Two identical yarns woven in three different structures produce three distinctly different sheets.

  • Percale: a one-over-one-under plain weave. Crisp, matte, breathable. Cool on the skin. Wrinkles readily and softens with washing.
  • Sateen: a four-over-one-under weave that floats yarns on the face. Smooth, slight sheen, warmer than percale. Snags on rings and rough nails.
  • Jersey: a knit rather than a weave. Stretchy and soft, similar to a T-shirt. Retains heat, pills at friction points on mattresses with rough seams.

Reading the label in the aisle

  1. Find the fibre content statement. Any bedding sold in the US or EU is required to list it. Look for 100% cotton or a specific blend percentage.
  2. Check the cotton descriptor. Supima, Pima, or Giza 45 indicate extra long staple. Egyptian cotton without a cultivar is ambiguous.
  3. Confirm the thread count is stated as a single-yarn count. If the package says two-ply or multi-ply, halve or third the count for a like-for-like comparison.
  4. Look for the weave: percale, sateen, or jersey. Sateen is often marketed as luxurious but sleeps warmer than percale.
  5. Check the care label for the maximum wash temperature. Cotton pre-shrunk to a sanforized standard shrinks less than one percent, whereas unsanforised cotton can shrink three to five percent on the first hot wash.

A quick note on GOTS and organic cotton

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a widely recognised certification for organic textiles. To carry the GOTS label, at least 70% of the fibre content must be certified organic, and the mark also restricts the dyes, bleaches, and finishing chemicals allowed at every processing stage. GOTS-certified cotton bedding is often a useful shortcut for shoppers who want independently verified fibre and process claims, since the audit chain covers ginning, spinning, weaving, and finishing rather than just the raw crop. A plain organic cotton claim, without GOTS or a similar certification, is verified only at the field level and says nothing about the chemistry used further down the production line.

Yarn count is the number that thread count depends on

Thread count only makes sense once the thickness of the yarn is known. Two sheets both listed at 300 threads per inch can weigh differently, drape differently, and last different lengths of time depending on the yarn count from which they are woven. The English cotton count (Ne) system is the standard used across most cotton bedding specifications.

  1. Ne 20 to 40: coarse yarn used for canvas, workwear, and heavy sheeting. Fabric weight typically 200 g/m² or above. Not used for premium bedding.
  2. Ne 40 to 60: medium yarn used for entry-level and mid-market sheets. Percale weaves at 200 to 300 thread count are common at this range. Fabric weight around 130 to 170 g/m².
  3. Ne 60 to 80: fine yarn typical of long-staple cotton sheets. Percale and sateen at 300 to 500 thread count. Fabric weight 110 to 140 g/m². This is where the practical durability of pure cotton bedding peaks.
  4. Ne 80 to 100: very fine yarn, usually spun from extra-long-staple cottons such as Supima or Giza 45. Sateens at 400 to 600 thread count in single-ply construction. Fabric weight 100 to 130 g/m². Sheets are silky but require careful laundering to avoid abrasion.
  5. Ne above 100: extra-fine yarn used in luxury shirting and premium sheeting. Rare in retail bedding because single-yarn weaves above 500 thread count are physically difficult to produce without splitting fibre.

The Ne number expresses the length of yarn per unit weight: Ne 60 means 60 hanks of 840 yards each per pound of yarn. A higher Ne means a thinner yarn, so more threads fit into an inch of fabric. This is the arithmetic behind the boast of a 1000-count sheet made from doubled or tripled short-staple yarn. Weavers spin three Ne 40 singles together to make what is effectively an Ne 13 multi-ply yarn, count each of the three plies separately, and multiply the actual thread count of around 300 by three to reach a nominal 900 count. The finished sheet is heavier, coarser, and less breathable than a genuine Ne 80 single-ply weave at 400 thread count, and it usually pills faster because the shorter fibres inside the doubled yarn work loose sooner. ASTM D3775 defines thread count as single yarns per inch, which is why some premium brands now publish yarn count and ply alongside thread count.
