Three families made from copper

Nearly pure copper, brass, and bronze are three distinct materials that look similar under a soft finish but behave differently under moisture, salt, and food contact. Brass adds zinc to copper. Bronze adds tin. Both alloys are harder, cheaper, and more corrosion resistant than pure copper, but each brings its own trade-offs.

Lead content in older brass

Older free-machining brass, particularly the C360 grade used widely in plumbing fittings before the mid 2010s, contains up to 3% lead as a machining aid. The US Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act took effect in 2014, requiring all wetted surfaces of plumbing sold for potable water to average no more than 0.25% lead. Brass fittings sold today for drinking water carry a lead-free designation. How each alloy ages

Copper cookware, tin, and stainless linings

Unlined copper reacts with acidic foods and can transfer copper to the diet at rates above the recommended limit for chronic exposure. Traditional French copper cookware uses a thin tin lining, hand-wiped onto the interior. Tin has a low melting point of about 232°C, which is why traditional copper pans are used for gentle heat tasks such as sugar work and reductions. Modern copper cookware often has a stainless steel lining bonded to the copper, combining the heat responsiveness of copper with the inert surface of stainless steel. A lining thickness of 0.2 mm or greater is common on premium pans; thinner linings wear through faster with abrasive cleaning.

Care that keeps each alloy sound

Brass grade numbers and what they encode

Brass is not a single alloy but a large family. The Unified Numbering System for Metals and Alloys assigns a five-digit code beginning with C to every copper alloy, with numbers between C20000 and C49999 reserved for wrought brasses. Reading the C-number reveals more about a brass fitting than the yellow finish suggests.

  • C21000, gilding metal: 95% copper, 5% zinc. Reddish-yellow, used for ammunition jackets, coinage blanks, and jewellery findings. Very ductile but soft.

  • C28000, Muntz metal: 60% copper, 40% zinc. Strong and cheap, used for ship sheathing and industrial fasteners. Prone to dezincification in seawater unless the surface is treated.
  • C36000, free-machining brass: 61% copper, 35% zinc, up to 3% lead. The lead acts as a chip breaker during machining. Historically the standard for plumbing valves and fittings before lead-in-drinking-water rules tightened.
  • C46400, naval brass: 60% copper, 39.25% zinc, 0.75% tin. Tin addition resists dezincification in seawater. Used for marine hardware and heat-exchanger tubes.
  • C69300, dezincification-resistant brass: around 62% copper, 34% zinc, plus small additions of arsenic, tin, or bismuth. Developed as a lead-free replacement for C36000 after regulations under the US Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act tightened the limit to 0.25% lead on wetted surfaces in 2014.

The colour of a brass fitting correlates loosely with zinc content. Below 15% zinc the metal keeps a red-copper tone. From 15% to 30% zinc the alloy takes a yellow-gold appearance. Above 35% zinc the colour shifts to a paler, greener yellow. Alloys between 32% and 39% zinc form a mixed alpha-beta crystal structure that machines well but corrodes faster in aggressive water, which is why plumbing hardware sold for potable water in the US, EU (under standard EN 12164 with dezincification-resistance testing), and increasingly in India specifies dezincification-resistant grades.
