A linear compressor typically runs quieter and uses less energy than a conventional model, but repairs cost more and qualified technicians are scarce outside major cities. Standard reciprocating compressors are noisier and less efficient by around 10 to 15 percent, but any appliance shop can service one.
Most brands offer 1 year on the full unit and 5 to 10 years on the compressor alone. Anything shorter than 5 years on the compressor suggests a shorter working life.
